A list of high-tech companies that managed to survive several decades is not that long, but a list of centenarians is even shorter. This year, this elite club was joined by a new member: the leading Japanese manufacturer of robots and automation systems Yaskawa Electric Corporation. Their recipe for success is deceivingly simple – doing the right things and doing things right – yet anything but straightforward to implement.

Since 2014, company Uwe Krumm Burbach GmbH (UKB) has been using the first 5-axis CNC-milling centre DMF 600 from DMG Mori delivered to Europe in the production of complex edging tools and in contract manufacturing. The innovation, presented at the EMO 2013 as a world first, with a six-meter machine bed and a rotary table is designed for workpiece weight of up to ten tonnes. Clamping of workpieces at UKB for all machining processes on all 14 milling machines is made with only two types of vices, regardless of the material, size or geometry of the component.
